“A record which might not represent the apex of the curve from trauma to health, but in fact something more sustainable. One beginning to realise, slowly, gradually, that the process is forever ongoing, but life can continue nonetheless.” So we wrote of Avery Friedman‘s New Thing back in 2025, the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Cleveland songwriter negotiating the frustratingly non-linear healing process with equal parts vulnerability and strength. The album was ambitious for a debut, both in terms of theme and style, but Friedman has since been working on a follow-up which aims to take an even bigger swing. We’re going to have to wait until 2027 to hear the result, but as she prepares to head out on tour across Europe and the UK, new single ‘You Move’ offers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect.
You only have to look at the artwork to get an idea of the tone of the single. Avery Friedman grasps the moment with force, even if it means getting her hands dirty. The result is decisive, tactile and loaded with a newfound purpose, as though having cleared the ground with the previous release, she is now ready and willing to grab at whatever life might throw at her next. “’You Move’ is about savoring the unexpected fruits that reveal themselves amid times of uprootedness,” Friedman explains. “It is a song about putting trust in the glimmer of new love, and carefully sowing the seeds for it to sustain. Both thematically and sonically, it’s about searching, surrendering and allowing yourself to relish. My hope is that ‘You Move’ invites people into the world of my soon-to-be-finished sophomore album – a world that encompasses a full-swing of emotionality, and lets loss and pleasure dance together.”
