“Works at the intersection of pop, folk and ambient styles. Utilising an array of technological techniques to conjure songs both mysterious and intimate.” So we wrote of Montreal-based songwriter, composer and producer JoJo Worthington back in 2022 upon the release of BAPTIZED I, an EP which started a personal yet spiritual narrative, spanning the stylistic gamut to paint a world in which the physical and metaphysical existed side by side. “I think of words / In my head,” as Worthington sung on single ‘Tried My Best’, “and try making the flesh connect / To this world / That I’m in / And to be as the Spirit is.”
But as the title suggested, BAPTIZED I was just the beginning, and now JoJo Worthington is returning with the second part, BAPTIZED II, before eventually releasing a full-length album ARMOUR OF GOD which will collect tracks from both of its predecessors alongside new material. Our first taste of this next chapter is ‘Ever Ender Star Infinity’, a brand new single which not only continues the narrative started back in 2022 but shows a clear evolution in Worthington’s cinematic style of indie rock. Turning its attention to the heavens, the track mines everything from Magic: The Gathering to astrophysics to synthesise its own spirituality, not least the latter’s idea that we consist of stardust which dates right back to the Big Bang. The sound itself rises as though in response to such grand imagery, offering a widescreen richness which only furthers the drama of the song, and allows celestial magic to once again colour reality.
