We’ve covered a number of singles from Québec-based songwriter Shaina Hayes in recent months, first with the aptly named ‘Flourish’. “A well-timed evocation of spring and all of it inherent hopefulness,” as we wrote, “blooming with an easy warmth as it gestures towards a brighter future of healing and growth.” Then came ‘Timid’, which turned these idea inward, “leaning” as we put it, “into introversion and the ways in which we might nurture our own interior worlds.” Both songs, it now turns out, will feature on Hayes’s third full-length Take the Case of a Rose, which will be released this autumn via Bonsound. Formed amid a period of personal transformation, the album is attuned to the moments upon which a life might hinge, finding potential for change within times ostensibly innocuous or mundane.
To celebrate the announcement of the record, Shaina Hayes has unveiled new single ‘Tempest’. Like previous tracks before it, the song finds Hayes meditating of the cycles and rhythms of her rural life, finding both solace and wisdom within nature’s propensity to change, be it dying back or growing anew. So while the track takes place within a personal storm, it is always reaching for a greater perspective. As though attempting to view one’s problems from a higher vantage might work as a kind of inoculation against fear of the unknown, instead installing a deep curiosity. “And I’m not scared of the world / And what it may hold,” as Hayes sings in a telling verse. “I just fear that I won’t / Have time to explore it.”
