A couple of weeks ago, we featured the title track from Modernism, the forthcoming record from Connecticut trio Perennial which will be released via Ernest Jenning Record Co and Safe Suburban Home Records. It was something of a calling card for the album, a sub-ninety second blitz of art punk that hurtled past like a runaway train, capturing its frenetic, grab-bag nature that smashes together influences from the last sixty years of rock and pop. “The press release describes [Modernism] as ‘Op art to dance to’, but the better metaphor is the tagline of a ‘1,200 second action painting’,” we described in the preview, “as Perennial streak and splatter disparate elements of their seemingly endless record collection into hectic patterns that feel at once reverential and totally new.”
With the album’s release on the horizon, Perennial have unveiled latest single ‘Ready! Steady! Go!’, another blast of relentless energy that somehow combines raucous punk rock with an air of 60s cool. The juxtaposition is just one of the many which mark the sound of Modernism—the record dense yet propulsive, experimental but intuitive, caustic and welcoming—and ‘Ready! Steady! Go!’ embodies the vibe perfectly. A song at once buoyant and bruising which seems to want to both dance with you and slap you around that face, earning each of the three exclamation marks in its title as it barrels towards its conclusion in under two minutes.
