Earlier in the month, we introduced Mirror at Night, the new album from Eric Angelo Bessel coming via Lore City Records, a follow-up to the delightfully esoteric 2023 album Visitation which promises, as we put it, “again collapses the distinction between the past and the future into something flat and beguiling.” Due for release on Halloween, the record comprises of twelve instrumental ambient tracks that feel like dispatches from some strange otherworld, combining Alesis synths and Mellotron to create something oddly timeless. The result is what the label describe as “twelve vignettes glimpsing the in-between realm; the past, present, and future merging into a still, obsidian surface.”
Ahead of next month’s release, Eric Angelo Bessel has released a second single to further introduce his singular vision. Titled ‘Non-diegetic Sound’, it’s another enveloping slice of avant garde ambient, soaring with a weightless grace beyond the suffocating confines of our terrestrial life. “‘Non-diegetic Sound’ scrapes the uppermost layers of Earth’s atmosphere,” Bessel describes, “calling out to the void of space where all time sighs and folds.” Nothing is quite what it seems within this space, true to Mirror At Night‘s promise to evade simple description. The futuristic vibe is balanced by the nostalgic tones of the Mellotron, and the synths blur the line between the organic and digital. A record that isn’t one thing or the other but everything all at once, offering different reflections depending on your perspective.
