New York three-piece Trinket are gearing up to release their EP New Hobby via Sad Club Records next month. Writing of previous single ‘Silver Thread’ back in November, we noted the “potent blend of lush nostalgia and serious self-reflection,” that constitutes the Trinket sound, living up to the band’s self-applied label of ‘dream pop from hell’. Latest single ‘Halo 22’ follows these sensibilities further, adding a dose of languid haze to push the band’s style into an almost slowcore territory.
“‘Halo 22’ is a self-dialogue about running away from something that’s good” guitarist/vocalist Madison Kate Proffitt explains. “It’s about trying to stop yourself from sabotaging something because that is the narrative you’ve carved out for yourself. This song is definitely the slowest/saddest/spaciest thing we’ve released so far, and probably the one that hits the closest to where I was at during the time we recorded these songs last winter. It’s hard to believe sometimes when something you’ve wanted is happening to you that you deserve it and that it can be uncomplicated.”
New Hobby was written during a difficult period. After being fired from an awful job, Proffitt decided to use unemployment as an opportunity. A rare chance to put time and effort into songwriting and push Trinket towards its full potential. ‘Halo 22’ captures this time in all of its conflicted glory, where sadness and nostalgia are nonetheless shot through with a sense of possibility.
