“A gritty and defiant indie pop song that rallies against the soul-sucking drudgery enforced on many by the capitalist overlords.” That’s how we described ‘Capital Alphabet’, the lead single from Loose Wing’s forthcoming album Miracle Baby. The Seattle-based project—led by Claire Tucker (of Black Nite Crash) alongside husband Jack Peters (bass), Aimee Zoe (drums) and Bill Patton (pedal steel, guitar)—utilise their distinctive blend of rock and art pop to rail against such forces. As though channelling sixties/seventies styles is to bring forth the countercultural aspects of those years too. Fun and catchy music as a weapon against the money-grabbers and power hungry.
Following suit, latest single ‘Country Numbers’ turns its attention to a different aspect of our current broken societies. Stripping away the previous track’s momentum in favour of a richer croon, the song plays like a long-lost anti-Vietnam War number, made all the poignant for its continued resonance. As Tucker simply puts it: “It’s weird that we, as societies, are willing to sacrifice people’s lives for things like global dominance.”
We were not meant to be known for things
Don’t rub it in our faces
Obscurity is a natural placement
And some dreams are only for ornament
And you’ll never get the time back
Don’t dye your hair with the blood of babes
