Described as an “ever-growing band of musicians” led by Claire G McClusky, georgie is a folk project from Rochester, NY which combines ecological, personal and political sensibilities in its careful arrangements. This month saw the release of Intimacy Hangover via Raincoated Records, the latest georgie release which serves as the ideal introduction to the project’s reflective, organic folk style brought to life together with Leaphe (guitar), Andie (cello) and Allegra R Dziedzic (bass).
With its acoustic strum and background whistling, opener ‘Alaska’ sets the tone. A track pining for the wilderness but not a lack of company, as though nature’s isolation need not entail loneliness. ‘The Ground’ delves into the tangled knot of a relationship with an unerring honesty, while ‘New Fear’ combines a traditional folk sound with lyricism more akin to country music (“i love the way you dance / love the way you fit your pants / i love the way you move / everything you do)
With an atmosphere of quiet remove, ‘Porch Talk’ contemplates relationships in an altogether more patient manner, championing simplicity as the primary mode of living and thinking. “She sits on the porch / she’s wanting nothing more,” as McClusky sings. “She knows what life is for.” As though only within peace can the larger forces of life be heard, be it on a nighttime wind or lover’s breath, small signals georgie mines for their deeper meaning.
i care for you
i’m there for you
i’m with you
please look at me
can you hear me?
do you want to leave?
