“A space for Texas-based multi-instrumentalists Falcon Bitch and Gumball to be themselves, however that might manifest in any given moment.” That’s how we described Austin’s Being Dead in a preview back in April, detailing how the pair use the project as a way to explore every inch of their personalities and positioning single ‘Muriel’s Big Day Off‘ as the encapsulation of the band’s “effervescent energy, not to mention the off-the-wall spirit which is always playful but never insincere.” As Falcon Bitch describes in the liner notes: “Our music is really a slice of our friendship. We’ve lived together and we’re always together and I feel like it’s a palpable thing.”
With album When Horses Would Run coming this July on Bayonet Records, the outfit have returned with new single ‘Daydream’. A psych-inflected Western pop number which channels the title’s equine energy, pulling the listener in with a galloping momentum. But the track is equally comfortable with warm, slow lulls too, as though between cantering bursts are the gentle evening trots along a ridgeline. The lyrics are similarly taken by such idyllic imagery, imagining a life lived within the freedom of nature, and what results is a glimpse at the mood Being Dead conjure with When Horses Would Run. A sound which nods to the romantic charms of the old West without succumbing to the fantasies of the past, and emerging with a newfound appreciation for the joy of the here and now.
You and me we’ll bloom in the sun
We’ll lift our tongues
And swallow the whole sky whole
When we wake we’re covered in dew drops
Lying on cool rocks
Watching the day drift on
