Jourdann – Sick of It

Jourdann is a songwriter and musician based in New York who uses her voice, baritone ukulele and the occasional synth to make songs about love, childhood nostalgia and contemporary mental health issues.

Following her debut EP, Brain Machine Broke, which released last September, Jourdann has returned with a sophomore effort, Taffy Town. It’s an EP that sees her continue to work in juxtapositions, disappointment and bitterness sitting side by side with a childlike sense of guileless wonder. Slow and sad songs like ‘I Can’t Stop Thinking of You’ sit next to others like ‘Simmering in Sadness’, which despite its title is (sonically at least) an upbeat indie pop track.

The record’s mid-point, ‘Sick of It’ captures the atmosphere perfectly, a chilled-out lo-fi bedroom pop anthem that aches with unreciprocated love. Subtle guitar is joined by plinking glockenspiel style keys and sedate beats, Jourdann’s vocals thick with a sense of fatigue and frustration. “This song is about a crush that’s gone sour from the start because you know for a fact that they don’t feel the same way about you,” she explains. “More specifically, it’s about being tired of constantly finding yourself in this situation over and over again and wishing that things would be different for once.”

Oh and will this be different
I’m tired of waiting
I’m sick of it

Taffy Town is out now and you can get it from the Jourdann Bandcamp page.
