Hailing from Minnesota and residing in Brooklyn, Anni Rossi is a songwriter, producer, performer and multi-instrumentalist who constantly tests the boundaries between artforms. A core member of Female Genius, Rossi has also contributed various instruments to records by the likes of Real Estate and Thor And Friends, as well as playing live as part of Peel Dream Magazine, Acrylics and Patience.
And this is to say nothing of her solo work. As well as releasing music in a more traditional manner with labels like 4AD and Too Pure, Rossi works within visual art and performance too, often incorporating video or theatrical elements. Like her collaboration with the Marxist anthropologist Michael Taussig as part of The Berlin Sun Theater at The Whitney, which saw her expand further into composition and performance.
Anni Rossi is therefore no ordinary musician or songwriter. Rather an artist positioned at the intersection of various modes of expression, ideally placed to draw from these different fields to create singular and inventive pieces of work. The latest such project, Wild West is an audio-visual collaboration with cinematographer Sarah Tricker. Four songs and four videos exploring the vast power and intricacies of the natural world.
Serving as the lead single, the title track introduces us to the work’s suitably evocative style. ‘Wild West’ is a folk song, but one which pushes beyond the conventions of the genre, dropping tropes in favour of an atmosphere at once beguiling and haunting. Check out the video below:
Wild West will be released soon and you can find more information on the Anni Rossi webpage.
