In spring 2020, Louisville, Kentucky three-piece Wombo released Blossomlooksdownuponus, an album on Sophomore Lounge that showed off their distinctively left-field style. Combining post-punk and psych with dashes of avant garde pop, the band conjured a constantly surprising sound that subverted every expectation. For Sydney Chadwick, Joel Taylor and Cameron Lowe not only reject the country leanings of the Louisville scene, but spurn any clear genre identity, favouring instead an imaginative, idiosyncrasy that’s sometimes quick, sometimes slow, but always pushing at the boundaries of weirdness.
Having now signed with Fire Talk Records, Wombo are back with brand new EP, Keesh Mountain, and latest single ‘Situations’ indicates their singular style is sounding better than ever. Bending post-punk angles with art rock verve, the track is taut yet plastic, liable to change direction without warning with a screwy manic charm. Though just when its diversions and transformations seem likely to self-perpetuate ad infinitum, the whole thing snaps shut before two minutes have passed.
“This song is about obsessive thoughts,” the band explain, “avoidance and overthinking yourself into a frenzied state to the point where it would’ve been easier and less chaotic to face the situation head on.”
Keesh Mountain is out on the 28th May on Fire Talk Records and you can pre-order it now from the Wombo Bandcamp page. You can also get a bundle deal which includes the cassette for Keesh Mountain along with the vinyl edition of Blossomlooksdownuponus.
