This month sees the release of A Love Song for Everyone, the debut album from Rome duo Permanent Vacation, on Z Tapes. In combining indie folk and bedroom pop sensibilities, then adding elements of shoegaze too, the band achieve a sound at once detailed and deep, retaining the intimacy of the classic Z Tapes aesthetic while weaving something richer in scope.
The album’s opening track and the final single before release, ‘Welcomed’ serves as the perfect introduction to this sound. The song’s wistful charm is rooted in acoustic guitar, though drifting lines of piano and the subtlest shoegaze swells lift it into something poignant and striking. What results is something reflective but charged with a sense of sense of motion too, as though in being caught between the past and the present, they choose to look to the future instead.
