Not Fit is a band based in Brooklyn consisting of Ben Griffin (bass), Jacob Block (drums), Kurtis Tuohy (guitar), and Claudio Tarchi (vocals). Back in April we featured the outfit’s debut single, ‘When It Goes’, describing how it combined rock, emo and alternative influences into a momentous and urgent sound. Utilising driving drums and the distinctive clarity of Tarchi’s delivery, the song marched forward into the uncertainty of our times, as we concluded in our piece:
The result is a track at once uplifting and striking, where the intention behind the sound is left unclear. Because the song is concerned with doubt and uncertainty, and whether the loops of quiet and loud represent a mastery of such emotions or their overwhelming arrival is left up to interpretation. One thing is for sure, the future is unclear and in all likelihood scary, yet Not Fit are plunging headlong into it all the same.
This month saw the release of ‘Naturally’, the third single from Not Fit and the final one before they release their EP, Inside Voices, later this year. Again very much concerned with the tumultuous present, the song picks through a society ruined by greed, bigotry and injustice, looking for clues as to how we might begin to build something fairer and better. The rhythmic bass and drums provide foundations for another urgent track, Tarchi’s vocals compelled on by shimmering guitar lines that rise and fall intermittently.
But unlike the ambiguity of ‘When It Goes’, the final sentiment of ‘Naturally’ is clear. A healthier, fairer and sustainable society will remain a dream in our heads or mirage on the horizon without serious engagement with what has gone before. A collective reckoning with who we are, how we allow the current systems to continued unabated. How change requires responsibility, from each and every one of us.
