Born in Southern California and now working out of New England, Tiffany Sammy is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer who records under the moniker TIFFY. A mixed time in and out of bands left Sammy butting up against the temptation to conform, but rather than sacrificing her own sensibilities she decided to set out on her own. The change allowed TIFFY to be a far more flexible endeavour, a project in which mistakes could be made and learned from, and Sammy’s own artistic vision realised.
The result was Fire Sale, an EP released last year that showed off TIFFY’s fun brand of fuzz-pop. Combining distorted guitars and swells of synths, the tracks veered between skippy energy and morose restraint, earning comparisons to Sonic Youth, Cherry Glazerr and Car Seat Headrest. More importantly, the release established the importance of gaining full control over one’s creative process, and kick-started Sammy’s vision for TIFFY.
Following on from the success of Fire Sale, TIFFY is back with Double Feature, a brand new single on Dollhouse Lightning featuring two new songs that again show the range of the project. Emerging from a theremin-like warble and settling into a hazy summer atmosphere, A-side ‘Don’t Wanna Talk’ is a track of frustration, the intermittent peaks in energy shaking free of the jangling sound as though the warm textures have come to represent their own claustrophobic, cloying space.
The track is followed by B-side ‘Something For Nothing,’ a peppy song of cleaner rhythms that swaps out the heavy humidity for something more focused and energetic. But if the motion is clearer, so too is the force in the vocals, allowing Sammy the opportunity for a looser, more hectic style that achieves a cathartic release.
