Not Fit – When It Goes

Brooklyn’s Not Fit are an indie rock band consisting of Ben Griffin (bass), Jacob Block (drums), Kurtis Tuohy (guitar), and Claudio Tarchi (vocals). Utilising the varied musical tastes and talents of each member, the outfit make an energetic and emotionally charged brand of indie rock that draws from various genres. Rock, emo and alternative are all obvious touchstones, with a driving intensity tying it all together.

Not Fit have big plans for 2020, with a series of singles set to be released across the year, and last week saw the release of the first track, ‘When It Goes’. Pushed by momentous drums, the track ebbs and flows between reflective verses and the dynamic chorus, its cyclical energy spiraling towards a crashing crescendo. Tarchi’s vocals live up to the style too, sounding clear-eyed in their ruminations and rising to surf upon the growing instrumentation.

The result is a track at once uplifting and striking, where the intention behind the sound is left unclear. Because the song is concerned with doubt and uncertainty, and whether the loops of quiet and loud represent a mastery of such emotions or their overwhelming arrival is left up to interpretation. One thing is for sure, the future is unclear and in all likelihood scary, yet Not Fit are plunging headlong into it all the same.

“Just give yourself to the night sky,
See it’s all made up in your own mind,
So breath with me, it’ll all go
Breath in deep, it’ll all go”

‘When It Goes’ is out now and available from the Not Fit Bandcamp page.
