The recording moniker of Toronto-based songwriter Alannah Kavanagh, Grizzly Coast started out as a solo acoustic endeavour but has since evolved into a deeper indie rock sound complete with a full band. Lyricism remains a primary focus for the project though, Kavanagh utilising her background as a poet to detail familiar situations and feelings in an evocative, imagery-based manner.
New single ‘Half-Light Boy’ serves to highlight this style. Possessing the confessional, unguarded emotion of the best solo music, the track is fleshed out by the full band to become a vivid slice of heartbroken rock. Operating within the liminal space between clinging to and moving on from someone who was once important, the song is essentially a message that will never be delivered, a cathartic detailing of the profoundly wounding experience of another’s selfishness.
The track comes complete with a Twin Peaks-inspired video by Parliament Pictures, leaning not toward full blown Lynchian weirdness but rather the series’ eerie brand of teen melodrama, forming the perfect compliment for the themes of the song.
Grizzly Coast will be releasing a debut full-length album in the coming months, so follow on Facebook, Twitter and Spotify for more information.
