Breakup Films is the shoegaze/dream pop project of 21 year-old Ron Herscovici from Tel Aviv. Ahead of the debut Breakup Films album due later this year, Herscovici has today released his first single, ‘You Said You Hate Not Seeing Me,’ by way of an introduction to his sound.
The song is a lesson in syrupy shoegaze, jangly guitars and lovelorn lyrics combining into something that both soothes and grazes. Lyrically, the song is pained and confused, the narrator pining for a loved one while simultaneously nursing the wounds of departure. Therefore, the primary pain of the estrangement is backed up by a secondary self-doubt, the lack of clear reasoning only adding to the anguish of the moment.
But all is not dour navel-gazing, and indeed it is impossible to judge whether the overall tone is angry or optimistic. Because, for all of the hurt of the lyrics, the dreamy instrumentation and cooed murmur of Herscovici’s vocals offer a sense of gentle consolation, a gauze that dresses the injuries detailed across the track, hinting at some future healing that will surely be possible.
“You said you hate not seeing me
But for the past year you’ve been gone
You said you hate not talking to me
So how come you never do at all?
I’ve wasted too much empty space
Trying to fit you in memory cells,
You said you hate not talking to me
And I’ll never figure this out, I guess”
