Ing are a three-piece from Richmond, Virginia, comprising of Hannah Balesi (guitar/vocals), Garen Dorsey (bass) and Will Mullany (drums). They have a self-titled EP on the way, which is being released on cassette by our good friends Citrus City Records at the end of the month.
‘Dust’ is the tape’s first single, and what we want to share with you today. After a sparkling opening, the track begins like a slow bedroom pop song, Balesi’s mumbled vocals drifting around sparse guitar and gently shuffling drums. In keeping with this style, the mood is downbeat and reserved, as though in the slow hours of torpor after some loss or heartbreak.
However, it doesn’t take long for things to lurch off in a different direction, sounding skittish as the drums kick into a nervous trot and guitar rushes along in an antsy rhythm. This erratic behaviour continues until the whole thing comes shuddering to a halt at the end, an illustration of how Ing like to keep things unpredictable, and giving new pertinence to the staccato scribbles of the album’s artwork.
