Mere Women are a post punk band from Sydney, label mates at Poison City Records with another great Aussie band Camp Cope (who we featured a while back). The band have followed their two previous albums, 2012 debut Old Life and 2014’s Your Town with several shorter releases. Back in May they released a split 7″ with Gold Class on Black Wire Records, and now they are back with a brand new single ‘Drive’.
The band say the song is about “leaving the city to find a simpler, more fulfilling existence”, but this isn’t some soft pastoral folk song, Mere Women make dark and defiant post punk, with rolling percussion and brooding guitars framing Amy Wilson’s exasperated yelpy vocals. The track kicks into another gear in the last third, becoming a bouncy and cathartic singalong.
