Tiny Dinosaurs is the recording project of LA resident, Julie Jay. Her latest EP, Awake, was born in a hospital bed after a complicated surgery put her into a coma and without voice for six months. Despite not even being sure if she’d be able to speak as before, the first thing Jay asked her sister for upon waking was her guitar and got to writing songs at the hospital. The results, mixed by producer/engineer James Frazee, form a five-song release. The EP will be out later this year but in the meantime we have the first single, ‘Shut Out The Light’, to whet our appetites. The song is an atmospheric one, blending folk and dream pop to conjure a sense of isolation and remoteness. Jay’s voice emerges as the clear centre point, the rest of the elements shifting and blurred, as though she’s calling from within a dream. These vocals are complemented by light electronics which float and flutter, the deep baseline lurking in the background as though threatening to push forwards. As the track progresses Jay is joined by Peter Silberman of The Antlers, his recognisable voice echoing behind her own and adding to the strength and confidence in her voice.
