Following on from our review of Alex G’s DSU yesterday, we are pleased to share more top notch bedroom pop, this time from Manchester’s Gorgeous Bully.
We first featured Gorgeous Bully on our Best Free Music list in 2012, and they have since put out a series of great lo-fi pop/punk releases via Bandcamp. If tapes are your thing then you can grab their latest release (from February this year) via Art is Hard Records.
The new song, ‘I Kept Your Teeth in a Jar by My Bed’ is a slight change of sound, toning down the garage rock vibes in favour of a slower, sadder brand of electronic ambient music. The strange and bleak lyrics so familiar to Gorgeous Bully are ever present though, with a tale of love and violence summed up by the refrain:
’You think I’m obsessed, I’m not ashamed’
The result is like a documentary on a serial killer where, through a carefully constructed back story of domestic abuse and isolation, and psychological analyses where bizarre violence is explained and rationalised, you start to understand or even feel sorry for the murderer.
