City States are a Chicago-based band who make “strange, forward-thinking art-pop”. Led by 34 year-old Joel Ebner, City States have just released their debut album, Geography. The album is influenced by the last 35 years of art-rock, from Eno’s Another Green World to more recent work by Radiohead and The Antlers. It was mixed by John McEntire of Tortoise and The Sea & Cake.
Halfway through the recording process, Ebner’s father sadly passed away, and so the album took on a new focus. The track ‘To Remember’is based on an eulogy Ebner gave at his father’s funeral which addressed their relationship via a Fender Jaguar that his father bought back in the 60s.
