Another release that we should have picked up/written up a while ago, Moon Ate The Dark is a collaborative effort from Welsh pianist Anna Rose Carter and Canadian émigré and producer Christopher Bailey. Their self titled debut was released in June on Berlin label Sonic Pieces (whose roster also includes Nils Frahm), and in their own words, is “a soundtrack to longing, memory and displacement”. While Miss Carter provides the emotional content via her exquisite piano textures, Bailey gives the pieces a sense of space, adding subtle reverbs, loops and drones. But this is far more than mere ornamentation – by manipulating Carter’s piano work, he creates a feeling of distance and wistful melancholia that only intensifies the album’s themes of isolation and loss.
