Among Giants, from Orlando, Florida, have a sound somewhere between Paul Baribeau’s singalong strumming and the urgent folky punk of Defiance, Ohio. It’s a genre that I really enjoy but don’t come across to often; a carefree abandonment of heavy production and intricate arrangements in favour of descriptive, plain speaking lyrics and good old-fashioned energy and feeling.
This isn’t to say that the album is sloppy or thrown together, it’s quite the contrary. Over a year in the making, Truth Hurts is a well put together album of admirable variety. There is some shouting (‘There is a Ghost’), some emotion (‘A Letter’) and some sounds that would fit nicely on the soundtrack of Tony Hawk 2 (‘The Pond’). In other words, all the things you could want in an album.
