I know opinion on Scottish music is very much spilt here at Wake the Deaf but I happen to on the positive side. One of the collection of talented Scottish bands, Meursault, have recently done a session with the Cardiff-based radio show The Waiting Room. They play some cracking new songs and the familiar (but equally brilliant) ‘William Henry Miller’. The show can be downloaded here or the individual tracks can be got over at the Scottish blog ’Peenko’.
I love what Neil Pennycock’s voice does in these songs, his distinctive sound is equally suited to gentle, subtle verses and the more raucous sections, giving a real sense of the emotion and effort that has gone into crafting this music. I can honestly say that ‘Settling’ is one of the best tracks I have heard all year.
I’m not sure when Meursault plan to officially record these new songs but I’d recommend going back to their (numerous) other releases to whet your appetite. These are available on Song, By Toad Records.
