ever is a recording project from Nashville, Tennessee. This release but i am (which appears to be the project’s debut) is full of songs spacious and minimal and wrought with emotion. From the acoustic-led opener ‘all these things’ to the wistfully electrified ‘lost in you’, ever make music that exist at the sad and lonely end of the bedroom pop spectrum.
The flutteringly emotive guitar on ‘chasing ghosts (from may to now)’ is reminiscent of Keaton Henson, as if it was recorded in a dark and empty room, while ‘losing sleep’ is charged with a different kind of energy. The general melancholy air remains but drums and guitar combine to make it feel freer and more expansive, instilling some sense of catharsis. As the name suggests ‘down (kenny)’ is a real downer of a break-up song, gently picked electric guitar and mumbled vocals.
“this apartment is empty
i don’t see you no more
you left me your keys
and a note by the door
packed all your bags
and you drove through he night
i’m sorry i can’t do anything right”

Percussion and self-loathing infuse ‘blue’, a song seemingly sung through gritted teeth, while ‘missin u’ strips things back, just acoustic guitar and and gentle vocals. Closer ‘still (if you can)’ begins in the same lull as the rest of the album, but hits its stride at the halfway mark, breaking into an explosion of noisy clarity.
