Sand Circles – Motor City

Sand Circles (AKA Martin Herterich) have been floating around the internet for a while, but material is pretty hard to come across, and not too accessible to those who (understandably) don’t have access to a cassette player (if you do, check out the cassettes available on California label Not Not Fun). However, I recently stumbled across a download for Motor City, Herterich’s most recent release. The album is an understated, downtempo evocation of the desolation and urban decay of one of the USA’s greatest embarassments. You might question how much connection Stockholm resident Herterich has with Detroit’s industrial poverty, but I think he captures the sense of hopelessness and forgotten promises that those images of dilapidated factories and homes conjure up.
