Memotone – Free 11 EP

On the subject of free releases, here is one that managed to squeeze itself in just before 2011 disappeared into a cloud of firework scented smoke. Memotone’s Free 11 EP was released yesterday in celebration of a year that has been a pretty good one for the man otherwise known as William Yates, with the release of no less than 4 other EPs*, a collaboration with Glaswegian producer Soosh (the portmanteauically titled Memoosh Parts 1 and 2) and endorsements from Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs, among others. Quite a lot to celebrate then.

Musically, Free 11 is a continuation of a movement toward a more agressive, beat driven sound, although without leaving behind too much of the textural depth that Yates mastered on his earlier releases. Oh, and there’s a remix of Aaliyah’s ‘Try Again’. Bizarre but brilliant.

Check out ‘Diplon’ above, and get the EP here.

Incidentally, Soosh’s fantastic first EP is available to download for free from his bandcamp until the 10th.

*Memotone’s other EPs released this year are: Multicolour and Lost Hours EPs, both on Black Acre; Memtone EP, the first physical release for Raised By Records; as well as a free EP for Bad Panda Records, which is available to download here.
